3 Reasons to Ditch Your Curriculum

As a homeschool mom, there are few things more important than knowing when to ditch your curriculum. Days, weeks and months of struggling can leave you despising your homeschool, when you should be enjoying it.

But homeschooling isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. It takes hard work, commitment and dedication to homeschool your kids. You certainly don’t want to give up at the first sign of trouble, so how exactly do you know when the right time to ditch your curriculum actually is?

3 Reasons to Ditch Your Curriculum

During a Busy Season of Life:

When life gets hectic, (and it most certainly will, at some point!) it’s a good time to reevaluate your curriculum choices.

Whether you’ve just had a baby, have a serious sickness in the family or will be traveling a lot, you can’t devote as much time and attention to teaching your kids like before.

And that’s totally fine! You can still be a great homeschool mom, even if you outsource some of the teaching responsibilities.

When Bear was a toddler, I was ready to put my girls back in public school.

Every single day, I struggled to teach their math lessons because he was constantly grabbing our book, crying during lectures or needing me to get him a snack.

Math is one subject that requires a lot of attention. Interruptions can throw your lessons into chaos and it’s hard to recover from that.

Instead of sending the girls back to school, I searched for an online program that would do the teaching for me.

Thankfully, I stumbled onto Teaching Textbooks. And, I’m not kidding you when I say, Teaching Textbooks saved our homeschool.

If it wasn’t for that switch, we wouldn’t be homeschooling today, over 10 years later!

When You’re Struggling…Bad:

Sometimes, no matter how much research you do or how much money you spend, you end up with a curriculum that just isn’t a good fit for your child.

When you’ve stared at the lessons for hours, day after day, and they still just aren’t understanding the concepts, it can leave you feeling frustrated.

I always encourage parents to find a curriculum that offers help, when they’re shopping. That way, you have somewhere to turn to before ditching your curriculum.

The simple act of reaching out to the company and letting them know about your struggles can make a huge difference.

They can help you work through it and possibly even offer free tutoring or one-on-one lessons.

Did you know: Teaching Textbook offers FREE one-on-one tutoring for struggling students?

When the Dread Takes Over:

Sometimes a curriculum can start to drain your spirit. It leaves you feeling bored and feels like it just sucks the fun out of your homeschool.

Usually this happens when there isn’t even engagement. The child can feel overwhelmed and really starts to dread school time.

When it’s more than just the typical pushback and you can feel the subject begin to feel like a burden in your homeschool, it may be time to ditch your curriculum.

I have a 3-tear rule: If my kids cry or have a serious conversation about an area of our homeschool that they hate, I toss the curriculum and find something that works better for us.

My kids are totally unaware of this rule and we’ve only used it twice but, man, tossing certain curriculum can really change the feel of your entire day.

All in all, it’s important to find a curriculum that works for you, not against you. Your curriculum should make your days easier and help guide you through the rough spots in your homeschool.
