So Much Fun on Day 3 of Marine Science Camp

Day 3 of Marine Science Camp was our last day at the lab and it was sure to be just as fun as the previous two days had been!

Our morning session at the Sea Lab was all about currents.

The kids learned all about what currents are and the many things that affect the currents.

Then they built and launched their own drifters in the pool, before heading out to the ocean.

Once there, we measured the ocean currents and launched the big drifter.

Drifters are used to track important information, like storms, pollution, etc.

When we were finished, we went shark tooth and otolith hunting.

Otolith are a fish’s ear bones. They have rings in them (like a tree) that you can count to determine the fish’s age. Our teacher, Kyle, found one!

Our afternoon session brought us back to the sea lab to learn all about oceanography and hurricanes.

We learned how hurricanes are tracked, named and retired.

Then we went to the ocean and measured waves then learned from the wave table.

Fun fact: The average wave height in Dauphin Island is 4 feet high. But Portugal often gets waves that are 106 feet high!

Our days at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab were amazing and something we’ll remember forever, but our Marine Science Camp wasn’t over just yet! Stay tuned to see how much fun we had on days 4 and 5!
