Hands-on Learning at Marine Science Camp: Day 2

Does your kid love hands-on learning much more than boring old books? Then Marine Science Camp is just what you need!

We enjoyed a whole week of jam-packed hands-on learning while at Marine Science Camp!

Today, we’re talking About Day 2!

Day 2

Day 2 started out with splashing through the marsh lands, looking for wildlife and learning all about the importance it plays in our environment.

Some of the cool things we talked about:

  • ribbed mussels
  • oysters
  • fiddler crabs
  • diamond back terrapins
  • Gulf coast marsh snakes
  • gators
  • blue crabs
  • spots
  • silverside fish
  • flounder
  • brown, white and pink shrimp
  • clapper rails
  • heron

We learned about how “Agent Orange” effected the area birds, how we lose marshlands to “high energy” and the types of wetlands.

We discussed the plants, animals and habitats that we found. Using the sein net, we discovered all sorts of cool creatures.

We caught a puffer fish, blue claw crab, grass shrimp (with eggs!) periwinkle snails and so much more.

Fun fact: Louisiana loses 300 feet of marsh every single day, due to “high energy.”

Then we headed to the ocean to learn about salt life! The kids loved using the instruments that scientists use!

The kids were stoked to find a litty bitty puffer fish!

We spent the afternoon learning about the tools marine biologists use to explore the deepest parts of the ocean. Then the kids made their own ROV (remotely operated vehicle) and tested them out on the water.

They were challenged to pick up rings floating around the pool. It wasn’t an easy task! Then they tried out everyone else’s device and gave constructive criticism.

After dinner, we hit up the beach! I love watching them develop new friendships with kids from all over the country!
