Years ago, our daily routine looked different than it does now. My kids woke up, ate breakfast and nestled around our kitchen table, ready for the day ahead. We would do hands-on activities, read about whatever their hearts desired and spend hours learning together.
But as my kids have grown, I’ve realized that I can’t do it all anymore. Well, I could. But I don’t want to. With 3 kids spread out between kindergarten and high school, it’s hard to do it all for all of them. Not to mention this season of life has us running to speech therapy sessions, pottery classes and assisting with the care of elderly family members. In reality, my plate is overflowing and I’m confident enough to say that I need help.
This year, I decided to enroll my oldest in live online classes. I wanted to find something she would love and could do without my help so I set out to find the best live online classes for homeschoolers.
I have received this product for free and was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own.
Why Live Online Classes?
We have done our fair share of online classes and it didn’t take me long to realize that live online classes are much more effective for our family. Just a few reasons we decided to go that route with our 9th grader this year:
She needs a deadline and accountability or else she gets overwhelmed and puts off her work. With live classes, she knows she has until the next “class” to get her work done. She is the type of kid who doesn’t want to disappoint anyone, so knowing the teacher will be expecting her to participate in the live videos is a huge motivator.
Help is Available:
One thing I’ve hated about online classes in the past is that when my child gets stuck, I don’t know how to help. When we enrolled in Big River Academy’s Crime Scene Investigation live online class, I knew I wouldn’t be able to help her when she got stuck. After all, my CSI knowledge is limited to the things I’ve learned from Horatio Caine on CSI Miami. 😉 With live classes, students are able to ask questions in real time, listen to the answers that other kids may have and get to know their teacher better.
Gives the Kids a Chance to Connect with Others:
I’m not going to lie: homeschooling can feel lonely to kids. While we do all kinds of fun things to ensure our teenager is surrounded by friends, long days at home can sometimes make her feel excluded from the rest of the world. Live classes allow her to meet with other kids from all across the world. While she doesn’t meet them, she does learn their personality and become friends with them.
Big River Academy
- Ease of Use
- Experienced Teachers
- Class Options
For us, we knew we needed to find a science class to round out our school year. When my daughter saw the Crime Scene Investigation option, she flipped. She loves mysteries and crime shows, so we signed her up!
Each of Big River Academy’s classes cost only $200 per semester. They meet live for 90 minutes each week and assign about 5 hours of school work for the week. This is perfect for us, as she can do it all at once or spread it out over the week and do about an hour of the classwork per day. After each class, kids can read the Chapter Review and then complete the assignment.
Miss Bookworm’s class had students from Maryland, Minnesota, Indiana and even Germany! Not only was her class taught by an active policeman but he has years of experience in criminal justice and crime scene investigation.
There’s so much more than just super fun electives available at Big River Academy!
- Foreign Language
- Social Sciences
- Test Prep
