8 Ways to Practice Self Reflection

Self reflection works better when it is structured. You should write down your actions, thoughts, and activities in an ordered and organized way to easily compare your progress after some time. You should do that regularly, at the end of every week, although the most important thing is to be constructive and honest when it comes to the things you haven’t done so well.

The following are some ways on how to structure self reflection so you can learn to control it.

Meaningful Tasks you completed in a week

Write down all the things you did in a week. You can also write some of your regular tasks, like talking to someone more experienced than you or reading a book, it is not necessary to write only about school. As long as you’ve learned something from that task, write it down.

Achievements

Write about your achievements, what skills you used to achieve, how you overcome any challenges, how did the completed task lead you to your achievements, etc.

Outcome

Review your activities and be honest with yourself. If something didn’t go as planned, remember it. Really think about why it didn’t go as you hoped. Go over every single step you did and find out where it started to go wrong.

Things to change

If things didn’t work, think about how you can do that task in a better way next time.  Going through everything you have written down gives you a goal to focus on over the coming weeks. And as the weeks pass, you will start to make improvements that will help you progress faster.

Skills –

To progress with your self reflection, you need to develop and improve your self reflection skills.

Openness

Openness means being free from stereotypes and inherited beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. And try to see and learn the things in the way that they really are. A good way to practice openness is through a decision journal.

Observation

Observation means the ability to look at yourself and your mind, the same as you look at any other external events. The best way to practice this skill is through mindfulness meditation.

Objectivity

Objectivity is the understanding that we are more than the contents of our own emotions, desires, and thoughts. Writing a thought diary can help you reinforce this understanding.

Using these easy tips, self reflection will become second-nature to your student!
