How to Teach Kindness in Your Homeschool

Sometimes we get so caught up in teaching core subjects in our homeschool that we forget there are other things our kids need to learn.

How to boil an egg, understanding how to write a check, knowing when to trust their gut and how to be compassionate to others are just a few things that I think are important.

But with our homeschool days jam-packed with family read-aloud, math problems, science experiments and history timelines, it can feel overwhelming.

But there are a few things you can do to ensure your kiddos learn kindness and compassion, all while homeschooling your kids.

3 Ways to Teach Kindness in Your Homeschool

Set an example:

The truth is, we are our kids’ greatest teachers, whether we realize it or not. The easiest way to teach your kids to be kind and compassionate humans is to simply be one yourself.

  • Remember that your words and actions carry weight.
  • Instead of judging people, show kindness and understanding.
  • When you want to lose your temper or belittle someone, walk away from the situation.
  • Replace harsh or unkind thoughts with praise or compliments.

Once you’ve mastered the art of controlling your tongue and thoughts, your children will see a much gentler and compassionate person.

Encourage kindness:

There are so many ways to be kind to people that we often overlook! Try helping your kids find ways to show love in different situations:

  • Think of others in all situations.
  • Offer to buy something for someone in need.
  • Give your old clothing or belongings to someone who could use them.
  • Provide a generous example for others to follow.
  • Spend time with someone who is lonely.
  • Speak kind words to someone who is struggling.
  • Donate your money to a worthy cause.
  • Instead of focusing on yourself, think of others first.

These are simple ways to encourage your family to lead generous, thoughtful lives.
