Bear is my wild child.
He’s constantly into something.
It didn’t take me long to discover that I would need a plan to keep him from driving me crazy.
A few years ago, someone told us a secret to raising boys: don’t let them get bored.
But, the thing is, we’re pretty firm believer in letting kids get bored. We don’t want to pack their days full of scheduled events and activities.
We want them to explore, adventure and wonder about things.
There’s a fine line between being bored and being TOO bored. And I don’t want Bear to get TOO bored because then he pesters his sisters and gets himself into hot water.
That problem ran over into our homeschool, as well.
When he is bored with his schoolwork, ain’t nobody learning nothin’! Instead of listening to me read, he tunes me out, talks out loud or fidgets noisily. He zones out and everyone around suffers.
That’s what’s led us to interest-led learning.
Instead of spending time reading about things he isn’t interested in, we can actually teach him several different subjects, on a topic that keeps him tuning in.
Waldock Way’s Interest-Led Unit Studies
Over the last few weeks, we’ve started using unit studies I found on The Waldock Way and, man, what a difference they’ve made!
We sat down and I let him choose which unit study he wanted to do. There’s everything from Space to Hogwarts, Wilderness Survival to Greek Heroes and Myths and darn-near everything in between. I was honestly kind of shocked when he chose “Traveling the States” but he’s been LOVING it!
