How to Make YouTube Safe for Kids

“Technology can become the “wings” that will allow the educational world to fly farther and faster than ever before—if we will allow it.”

– Jenny Arledge

In this day and age, it’s silly to think of technology as anything other than a vital tool that our kids will use to learn. From online curriculum to Netflix, technology has literally changed the way kids learn. And one of the most amazing tools in our kids’ toolboxes is YouTube.

No matter what you’re looking for, you can find it on YouTube. My husband watched hours of Alec Steele before attempting to forge his own knife. At 14, my daughter has watched videos on everything from art lessons to baking challenges. My 11-year-old daughter has watched hundreds, if not thousands, of videos on how to care for her goats, rats and dogs. My 6-year-old is obsessed with dinosaurs and has learned way more from YouTube than I ever dreamed of teaching him.

I received this product for free and was compensated for my time. All reviews are 100% my own.

Turning your kiddo loose on the world-wide web is a scary thing, though. You never know who or what is on the other side of the screen. Prewatching every YouTube video is nearly impossible, no matter how proactive you try to be. That’s why I was so excited to discover the Safe Vision App.

With sheer craziness on the rise, YouTube videos can be scary. One of my daughters’ favorite YouTubers recently showed a dead body in one of his videos. MoMo has popped up and caused parents all over the world to freak out. YouTube simply isn’t a safe playground for kids anymore. Instead, it’s filled with violence, hate and people making poor choices.

So when people hear that we do a huge chunk of our homeschooling using our Kindle Fires, they ask me how I manage to keep my kiddos safe. The answer is simple; we use the Safe Vision App.

Safe Vision is a free app that allows you to pick and choose which YouTube channels your kiddos have access to. It streams only the most safe content, previewing it all for you ahead of time.

Safe Vision Premium App for YouTube

Parental Controls Make All the Difference

While controlling the entire internet is nearly impossible, I found that my kids spend 99% of their online time browsing YouTube. Their YouTube searches were innocent enough, but YouTube was providing them with junk. When they searched for “baking videos,” they were offered videos filled with cuss words and crude behavior. When I reviewed what my kids were watching, I only saw clean search terms. It wasn’t until I sat down with my daughters and watched “animal videos” that I realized the innocent keywords weren’t “clean” at all.

Once we started using the Safe Vision app, I saw a shift in content. No longer were my kids being offered junk videos, but instead clean and wholesome videos, which is exactly what they wanted. And best of all, I can go back and see exactly which videos they’ve watched. With Safe Vision, there’s no hiding anything from mom! 😉
