3 Easy Ways to Improve Reading Skills

When you have a struggling reader, it can be exhausting trying to help them understand all the rules, sounds and phonics they need to succeed. Trying to improve their reading skills can seem like an uphill battle but it doesn’t have to be. With a little bit of patience, you can help you kiddo learn to read without pulling out your hair!

As a mom who has been there and done that, I can promise you that your child’s struggles will not be the end of the world. You can read all about our stuggles here. With time, she improved and I honestly believe it was my (hard-as-it-was-to-do) relaxed approach that helped her soar.

Now that I have a few years of homeschooling under my belt, I’ve realized I don’t have to travel this road alone. Instead of crying to my husband about our struggles, I now know there is no shame in tossing curriculums who aren’t helping until I find the one that works for US.

If you’re in the same boat, I urge you to not feel defeated. Reading is HARD. It will take some time but in the meantime, improve your little one’s reading skills with these gentle ideas.

3 Easy Ways to Improve Reading Skills

Read Aloud:

While you want nothing more than for your little one to read their books on their own, sometimes they simply can’t. Instead of pushing, take the book and read it aloud to them. This will not only demonstrate patience but also show your kiddos that you are on their side. We want them to know we see their stuggles and want to help them.
Kids still benefit from being read to. In fact, my teenage daughter still loves when I read out loud to them. And trust me, she reads plenty of her own.

Find the Right Books:

No matter how hard you push, your kids will simply not enjoy some books. I thought all kids would enjoy Junie B. Jones, but found that my daughter would gladly read on her own when given a National Geographic book. As the saying goes, “Everyone is a reader. Some just haven’t found the right books yet.”

Make It Fun:

What if I told you that you can improve reading skills without a book? Well, you can! There are so many ways to make reading fun. Try online reading games or Reading Eggs’ workbooks, for example. With everything you need in one workbook, your kids can learn to read without ever cracking open a Dick and Jane book. Best of all, they’ll enjoy it so much that they won’t even notice they’re learning!

Captivating Illustrations:

One of my biggest complaints about workbooks is that they can seem dull and boring. The same layout, page after page, can make kids lose interest quickly. Reading Eggs has done a spectacular job of keeping the workbooks fun and engaging! With bright colors and fun illustrations, kids actually enjoy the workbooks.

Easy-to-Understand Questions:

All too often, kids skip right past the instructions and start answering questions, without any guidance. With short, easy-to-understand instructions, kids can easily see what they need to be doing, by following the bold words. In fact, most paged don’t require much instruction, which is a HUGE plus when dealing with a stuggling reader.

Quick Lessons:

Little ones don’t like to spend a ton of time, especially on a subject they’re struggling with. Reading Eggs packs a huge punch! In just a page or 2 each day, your child’s reading skills will soar. They don’t need to spend hours learning how to read because they teach the building-blocks they need to succeed.

Double-Up on Learning:

I was pleasantly surprised when my son wanted to do his “computer work” right after finishing up his Reading Eggs workbooks. Of course, I hadn’t told him it was the same program that he loves to play online, so instead of refusing to let him re-do his work, I just let him do it again…this time online! Little did he know, he was learning while having fun! (Sneaky learning is my favorite!)

But guess what!

Reading Eggs offers more than just help with your reading skills. They also offer Mathseeds in book format now, too!

And can I just say that I spent over $100 on a fancy-schmancy kindergarten math curriculum and he would MUCH prefer to “play” Mathseeds. Mommy fail, right there, folks.
