Homeschool Family Movie Night Ideas

Friday nights are our night to recover from the week. My husband is exhausted from working construction all week. Me and the kids are pooped from homeschooling and all of our running around. Everyone needs to recharge and this is the perfect time. Over the last few months, we’ve made it a habit to have a homeschool family movie night every single Friday night.

To be honest, our Friday nights have become one of our very favorite traditions. We use the night to enjoy an easy dinner and relax after a long week. By Saturday morning, we’re ready to run to soccer practices, work in the yard or spend the day hiking our favorite trails.

Friday’s homeschool family movie nights are the exact breath of fresh air we need!

This is a sponsored post. I was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own.

5 Tips for a Successful Homeschool Family Movie Night

Snacks:

Let’s talk about the most important things first: food. One thing that makes family movie night a lot of fun is the snacks you provide. You can opt for themed snacks, or just a big ol’ bowl of buttery popcorn. Either way, make sure you provide something tasty to tickle your taste buds.  We like to order a pizza for our family movie nights. Since we don’t do it often, it always feels like a treat! Plus, clean up is quick and easy!

Get Comfy:

Grab a bean bag, make a blanket fort or blow up an air mattress in front of the TV. No matter what you do, make sure the whole family is comfy. Throw your blankets, pillows and couch cushions on the floor for some added fun. Break out the tent and “camp out” in the living room while you’re watching a movie. Do something unexpected and fun to make the family comfy while you binge-watch your favorite movies.

Eliminate Distractions:

Family movie nights mean a lot to little ones. While it may not be a big deal for the parents, the kids absolutely love it! Hard as it may be, give your family movie night 100% of your attention. Put your cell phone down. Resist the urge to pull out your laptop. For a couple of hours, just enjoy a good movie with your loved ones. While it’s a little gesture, it means the worlds to your kiddos!

Lights Out:

Going to the movie theater is stupid-expensive. Last time I took myself and my 3 kids, we spent $48 on tickets and one large popcorn and drink! And that was the matinee! Prices are outrageous but you can create the same effect at home. One of the easiest ways to amplify your movie experience is to get rid of any light. Turn out all lamps and overhead lights. Draw the curtains. Keep cell phones and laptops shut off. This one little tip can elevate your viewing experience so much and it only takes a minute to get your home as dark as possible.

Be Picky:

When you’re choosing what you want to view on your family movie night, it pays to be picky. I’m so tired of movies that showcase hateful teen behavior, crude humor and scantily-clad girls. What I love are movies that offer strong female leads, competent parents and relatable scenarios.  We recently watched a movie called Mount Hideaway Mysteries: Exes and Oh No’s and we fell in love. My kids even asked if there would be a sequel and I’m certainly hoping there will be!

With movies like Mount Hideaway Mysteries: Exes and Oh No’s, your homeschool family movie night can not only encourage homeschool families but also helps normalize the idea of homeschooling.

The movie was written and directed by Brett Monk, a homeschool dad.  Many of the actors , producers, cast and crew are also homeschool graduates. Not to mention, the main characters, wise as they are, were homeschooled! I was stoked to see the leading lady was not only kind and compassionate but also smart and quick thinking. She was the perfect role-model for my girls! The family-friendly movie was clean yet interesting. It challenged us to solve the murder mystery, while throwing in a bit of homeschool humor at the same time.

One of my favorite lines said something like “I was homeschooled. My PE included baling hay and studying Kung-Fu.”  How true is that statement!?!

The characters in Mount Hideaway Mysteries: Exes and Oh No’s are very approachable. I immediately saw the similarities in my own teens and the characters. The characters were sarcastic yet respectful, which made them very relatable for all ages.

There’s no reason to compromise your family values just so you can enjoy a family movie night with your kiddos!
