Feeling behind? Learn how to get caught up in your homeschool.
Last week, I was talking to a local mom who was just at the end of her rope. Their family had had a rough couple of months and homeschooling had taken a backseat to her parents’ health issues.
She was just so torn, not knowing what to do or how to do it all. Her aging parents only have a short time left to live and she’s stuck with the task of driving them back and forth to appointments and treatments. And of course, this happens right as her husband is out of the country for a few months with work obligations.
No matter how she tried, she was left feeling defeated.
She was running her kids to play practice at the local theater and came home to heat up corndogs for dinner each evening.
No matter how exhausted she is, she didn’t want to pull them from something they enjoy so much. So all of her energy was split between the play rehearsals and her parents health battles.
She felt like she was sinking and would never get back to the surface. In her exact words “I’m basically becoming the worst homeschooler in the whole world but I don’t know what other choice I have, other than to put them in public school.”
Her fear is that her kids will end up so far “behind” that she’ll never be able to get them caught back up.
After finally convincing her that there is no “behind” in childhood, I told her that she will always have options later.
I encouraged her to focus on what matters most in this season of life and not worry about the rest. (I know that’s easier said than done.)
After a few minutes, I told her a few tricks I’d used to help my own kids get caught up when life happens and we are left feeling like we’re running a never-ending race.

3 Ways to Get “Caught Up” in Your Homeschool
Skip to the Meat:
So much of our curriculum is just “fluff” or stuff that’s been added so we can stretch the curriculum out to last an entire year. Instead of trying to do one lesson a day, while knocking out every extra activity, supplemental worksheet and all the extra reading, just skip to the meat of the lesson.
You can knock out multiple lessons a day in history, science or geography, if you just do the basic and ignore all the extras.
Of course, that’s the fun stuff, so be sure to include SOMETHING fun but you don’t have to do every single thing a curriculum suggests.
Toss the Books:
One year, we managed to get so far behind in history that I told my kids we just weren’t doing it anymore for the rest of the year. Instead of feeling overwhelmed and struggle to catch up, we just removed it from our lesson plans. Instead, we watched historical movies, took field trips based on historical locations and checked out a few extra books about historical figures from our library.
While we didn’t completely abandon learning history that year, it was MUCH more enjoyable and pleasant for the whole family.
Use a Curriculum that Works for You:
So often, we get caught up on using the curriculum that we purchased, no matter how miserable it makes our lives. But you don’t have to stick it out if it’s not working.
There’s no reason to fight tears and kill your child’s confidence, in the name of sticking with a curriculum you purchased months ago. Instead, find a curriculum that works with you and is flexible for your life.
And if you do feel like you’ll never be caught up, find a curriculum that helps you get caught up, like Learn Math Fast.

Learn Math Fast
Learn Math Fast is a complete curriculum that does exactly what the names suggests: helps you learn math fast.
Whether you’re behind in your homeschool, just need to brush up on your math skills or want to earn your math credits quickly so you can graduate early, Learn Math Fast can help.
You may be wondering how it can be possible to learn math fast?
It’s all in the way the curriculum is taught. Learn Math Fast is perfect for grades 1-12. Instead of basing the lessons on multiplication, students instead learn math based on addition as the foundation.
Each lesson is laid out in an easy-to-understand format. Students will read through the teaching then answer the questions that go along with it. Each lesson takes us about 15-20 minutes so we usually do a couple of lessons each day we do math.
The simple and effective approach works because students can work at their own pace. Since they are reading the teachings, instead of audibly hearing it, they can easily go back over any parts they didn’t understand.
The teachings are broken down for you, in as simple as possible terms. The step-by-step processes are worked out in front of you, for you to see exactly what happens in each and every step. Every book covers topics in a way that just makes sense.
Since you’re cutting out all the “fluff” and only learning the important things to build a math foundation, you can move through the program much quicker than your typical curriculum.
By the end of the series, your child will be ready for college-level math classes!
How Fast Can I Learn Math?
Of course, how fast you learn depends on each individual person. While an older kid can breeze through the lower volumes, a 6 year old will move much slower. But all students can get through the Learn Math Fast System much more quickly than any other curriculum.
Volume 1: Math Facts
Older Students: 1 month or less
Middle Schoolers: About 2 months
Volume 2: Fractions, Percentages, Negative Numbers
Older Students: 1 month or less
Younger Students: 2-6 months
Volume 3: Pre-Algebra
Older Students: 1 month or less
Younger Students: 2-3 months
Volume 4: Basic Geometry
Older Students: 1 month or less
Younger Students: 2-6 months
Volume 5: Algebra 1
Older Students: About 3 months
Volume 6: Algebra 2
Older Students: About 3 months
Volume 7: Geometry
Older Students: About 2 months
If you’re doing the math, an older student can work through all 7 books and be college-ready in about 12 months. That’s much faster than other math curriculum!

But does Learn Math Fast REALLY Work?
You bettchya!
And Emersyn is living proof. She set her mind to graduating early and used the Learn Math Fast system to complete all of her high school math credits, in just over 2 semesters!
The program’s creator, former homeschool mom, JK Mergens created the program for her own son. She saw his success with it and wanted to share it with other homeschool families across the world!
Using her system, JK Mergens’ son was able to enroll in college at just 16 years old. He then became a college math tutor and now he has three college degrees and works as a Structural Engineer.
If that’s not living proof, I don’t know what is!
