As a homeschool mom, there are very few things I take for granted when it comes to homeschooling my kids. I know I’m blessed that we can afford to homeschool. We have a home that allows me to hoard books and curriculum as I desire. My family supports our decision and often joins us in our learning adventures.
One reason I consider myself lucky is that our state has pretty relaxed homeschooling laws. Testing is not required and there are no strict regulations. We do need to keep track of our hours but that’s about it. No complicated portfolios or jumping through hoops to meet government regulations.
But sometimes, the easy-going laws can actually make it tougher on me. You see, I’m not the most organized person. {GASP!} Sometimes, I struggle with keeping up with my schedule. With so much family nearby, our well-structured day can suddenly turn into a day out at Chuck E. Cheese with grandparents, at the drop of a hat. And I don’t want to change that. I love the freedom that homeschooling brings us. I love that our family can interrupt our day and no one will call the truancy officers on us.
But all of that unplanned fun wreaks havoc on my homeschool plans.
Books that were meant to be finished by Thanksgiving break sometimes get pushed to Christmas break. Science experiments get pushed to the back burner while we play catch-up on the basics. Planner after planner got tossed out the door when a busy week arose or family came in from out of town. A flexible homeschool schedule is a dire need in this house.
Between ever-changing appointments, vacations and family days, a flexible homeschool schedule is worth its weight in gold. But finding something that is easy to use, meets my standards of flexibility and is easily accessible to the entire family can be quite a challenge.
