Field Trip: GoodMan Meat Processing

Our itty bitty town doesn’t have many businesses, but today we had the opportunity to tour one of them.

Goodman Meat Processing is one of the longest running business in our town. It was built in the 1940’s and had few upgrades until the new owners took over, about 3 years ago.

They had a different vision for the shop, turning the focus from “meat locker” to “tasty meats.” They added a smoke room and created the “Bacon Burger.”

The guys that run the place are great people.  We hit them up a few years ago, when I was on PTO at my daughters’ school and they were more than happy to donate or sponsor, anytime we asked, which most small businesses didn’t do.

They showed us around, touring the “kill room,” meat lockers, “hanging rooms,” and the processing area.  We got to see them slicing the beef into the different cuts of meat, grinding the meat and how they package and vacuum seal the meat for freshness.

We had a great time, learning how the meat goes from stage to stage, starting as a live animal and ending up as a steak in our freezer.
