I’m good at a lot of things in life. I can make people laugh. I cook cook a mean pan of lasagna. I can give you good advice, organize your closet or give a speech at your wedding.
But one thing I’m NOT so good at is homeschooling my boy.
I don’t know why he’s so much different than my girls but homeschooling him has been nothing short of a challenge for me. It’s like throwing spaghetti at a wall. I’m just hoping something, anything, sticks.
Even though he’s in 7th grade this year, I still struggle to keep his focus and make learning FUN for him.
And I know that’s the secret: make them ENJOY learning so they aren’t bored to death. But no matter what I try, it doesn’t seem to work for him.
Over the last few years, I’ve given up trying and just pushed through our curriculum, praying SOMETHING will work.
I was just so tired from planning unit studies that he didn’t enjoy. Organizing field trips where he would just goof off instead of listen. Buying fidget toys to help him focus.
Nothing was helping.
So I gave up.
This summer, I was talking to a local mom and telling her about my struggles when she suggested something I hadn’t tried:

Don’t stick solely to one approach in our day. She suggested trying a unit study for one subject, worksheet for another and a hands-on activity for yet another. She promised it would make our day go more smoothly!
