3 Tips for Choosing a Homeschool Science Curriculum
When it comes to choosing a homeschool science curriculum, you shouldn’t make it harder than it needs to be. In fact, science is one of the more exciting subjects for elementary kids and should be treated as just that.
Over the years, I’ve found myself looking for the same 3 things when choosing a homeschool science curriculum for our family.
3 Tips for Choosing a Homeschool Science Curriculum
Engaging & Hands-On:
Science should be FUN! There’s nothing that kills the excitement of science faster than a dull and boring textbook. I always look for a curriculum that includes hands-on activities and experiments to go along with an engaging text.
Affordable:
The truth is, I don’t have a big budget to buy all the latest, fancy new curriculum. I need something affordable that I can reuse over and over again with each of my kids. Consumable workbooks make that impossible.
But a high-quality textbook is exactly what I love. You can use it with each kiddo and then turn around and resell it to other homeschoolers when we’re done with it!
Covers All of Your Elementary Years:
There’s nothing I hate more than falling in love with a curriculum to find that they don’t have a continuous series for us to use the next year.
When I find something I like and that works for us, I don’t want to have to hunt down new ideas and research curriculum again the next year. I simply want to buy the next book and keep going! I’ve spent countless hours researching so I hate repeating that process, looking for something similar to what works for us!

Science Through HiStory
I recently found a new-to-me curriculum called Science Through HiStory. As soon as it landed on my doorstep, I was smitten.
The textbook hits all of the things I look for when choosing a homeschool science curriculum!
Science Through HiStory takes a different approach to teaching elementary science. Instead of teaching by topic, it explores science chronologically, teaching as it was discovered.
That means the topics are constantly changing, keeping kids engaged and wanting more.
The topics become unified by the people who studied and discovered them.
A Science Curriculum for K-6
Science Through HiStory is one of the most affordable homeschool science curriculum on the market, at just under $50 for the textbook and “Helps and Hints” workbook. You can get all 5 levels for around $200 and they will get your child all the way through elementary school!
- Science in the Beginning
- Science in the Ancient World
- Science in the Scientific Revolution
- Science in the Age of Reason
- Science in the Industrial Age
The Science Through HiStory homeschool science curriculum is designed to be done every-other day or twice a week, depending on your preference. Each lesson consists of 2-3 pages of engaging text reading and hands-on activities, with lots of experiments.
There is a simple list of supplies needed for each of the lessons, in the front of the book.
At the end of each lesson, you’ll find a couple of review questions. We love how these are broken up into “youngest students,” “older students,” and “oldest students.” It easily ensures that my child is staying right on track.
The hardback textbook and “Helps and Hints” booklet make Science Through HiStory a breeze! All your students needs is a simple blank notebook for taking notes and drawing.
