As homeschoolers, there are specific things that just make our day easier. A high school morning basket is at the top of my list!
When my kids were in elementary school, morning baskets were sometimes the only way we accomplished much of anything in our days.
We’d start out our days, nice and slow. I’d have my morning Pepsi while the kids slowly migrated to the main living areas. They’d pour a bowl of cereal while I’d unload the dishwasher and get the house ready for the day. A quick check of the calendar, teeth brushing and a snuggly blanket and we would be ready to tackle our morning basket.
Back then, we often covered our entire subjects with the use of our morning basket. I’d read aloud from our living books while they doodled their names in cursive or played with Play-Doh.
But as they got older, I felt the needs of our morning basket change.
With my second kiddo halfway through high school, I feel like I’ve really gotten a grasp on what your high school morning basket needs…and it’s probably not what you’re thinking!

Simplicity:
One of the most important things I’ve found when building my kids’ high school morning basket is that less is more. There’s no way I’m shoving history, geography and language arts into this, so I don’t even try.
Instead, I give them books and activities that I know they’ll love. I don’t include a ton of options, as I rotate the books out pretty regularly. Instead, I only include things I know will have a big impact, instead of just “fluff.”
Keeping it simple takes the overwhelm out of morning baskets.
Meaning:
When Emersyn started high school, I struggled to find something that kept her attention. I was giving her things I thought she’d enjoy but she wanted something more.
I started to include Bible-themed books in her high school morning basket and it changed our day.
Now she starts her day with Jesus-inspired learning and it sets the tone for her day.
Giving kids something with value and meaning is a great way to make good use of the morning basket.
Fun:
High school morning baskets are the perfect way to add some fun to your teen’s day.
Crossword puzzles, word searches and brain benders are a few easy ways to do this.
