3 Things to Look for in a New Curriculum

3 Things to Look for in a New Curriculum

We’re almost to the end of another school year now and for many of us, it’s a time to stop and reflect. We look back on what’s working and what’s not. We think long and hard about how we can make this time with our kids more effective, teaching them all the things we want to equip them with for their life ahead. We buckle down and really evaluate how each and every curriculum is effecting our day.

And, at this point in the year, we’re WAY more likely to toss out the curriculum that isn’t working and put in the hours of research to find just the right product for our family. We’ve dealt with struggles all year and we’re ready to try something new.

There are a few things you should look for specifically when you look back and reevaluate your homeschool year.

3 Things to Consider When Looking for a New Curriculum

Where is the struggle?

There’s no point in focusing on the things that you aren’t struggling with.

Think about your entire day, from the moment you wake up until the lights go out at night.

What is working?

Where are you struggling?

If you really evaluate your day, minute by minute, you’ll easily see where the problem is. Focus on finding a solution for this area first. Then make smaller improvements to other areas of your day as needed.

An easy way to keep track of the stuff that needs work is to simply write it down. Keep a notepad handy for an entire day and jot down any time you feel frustrated or can see your kids begin to feel frustrated.

What options can we afford?

Unfortunately, I can’t afford a lot of the pricey curriculum on the market today but that’s okay.

Knowing that I can’t splurge on one subject for each kid helps keep me realistic.

I can easily narrow down my options, based on my budget.

I like to look at all of our subjects and see where each kid is struggling, then figure out an affordable option for that subject.

What is the ideal solution?

When I think about my day, I try to think of what I wish it looked like.

  • Do I want to spend hours each day diagramming sentences?
  • Is it actually important to me that my kids dissect a cat in their science class?
  • Do I even have the energy to teach math to all of my kids?

Once I have an idea of what I want my day to look like, I can start searching for the curriculum that will help me achieve that goal.

With so many options on the market, there’s no point in struggling to teach subjects that don’t come naturally to me.

There is no such thing as the perfect curriculum because each homeschool family is unique.

For us, the perfect curriculum would include flexibility, be budget-friendly and offer a money-back guarantee.

I love that I can get an entire year of access to ALL levels! Finish a “grade” early? Just move right along to the next level. No need to buy another program. Work as quickly as you can or as slowly as you’d like. The choice is yours!

CTCMath’s mastery approach ensures kids really retain the information but having access to all levels allows you to go back and brush up on topics when needed.
